Brand Story

The reason for founding Oy was, as so often, a frustrating experience, frustration that no surf bikini on the market actually met our needs and demands: either it slipped, was uncomfortable, made of cheap material or just looked terrible. So we got tired of compromising and decided to take things into our own hands and founded Oy in 2012. Since then, we have been developing and producing surf and activewear that meets our high demand for functionality without compromising on design. 2017 we started production with recycled materials and moved our production to Portugal for shorter ways of transportation.

Brand Transparency

Who answered our brand transparency questions?

Dario Zadra – CEO at OY Surf Apparel Europe UG.

Fair Trade

How do you ensure "Fair Trade" manufacturing?

We care about the welfare and safety of our workers. They are being paid fair wages according to the workers’ category. The factory fulfills and guarantees compliance with all legal safety and hygiene requirements and of course insurance coverage. At least once a year, we travel to our visit our factory multiple times to see that the factory complies with the promised working conditions.

Social Justice

How do you ensure "Social Justice" with your internal and external corporate environment?

Oy strongly dislikes any kind of discrimination and strives for equal rights for all people. Social background, gender, or color have no influence when hiring. Despite our limited options, we strive to offer a wide range of sizes and show them on models of different color and body types.

Recycled Material

Which "Recycled Material" do you work with? What makes this material sustainable? And what makes it better compared to conventional material?

Our uni-colored fabrics are made of recycled polyamide, also known as Nylon. We use a regenerated polyamide from industrial waste called Econyl®. The global warming impact of using Econyl® is 80% lower compared to nylon produced from virgin oil. For our print designs, we use recycled polyester made of former plastic bottles. Recycled polyester is almost the same as virgin polyester in terms of quality, but its production requires about 60 percent less energy compared to virgin polyester.

How can you ensure that at least 50% of your total product range is "Vegan"?

Up until 2020, we were using leather tags for the branding of the products of our signatures collections. With the branding update in 2021, we are completely eliminating the use of leather.
