Upon my arrival at Germany’s 1st ‘Hygge’ hotel (means coziness or well-being in Danish & Norwegian), Lulu Guldsmeden, I am excited to enter this beautifully renovated old building. Later, I learned that it was built around 1850. I enjoyed my welcome drink on the comfy brown English sofa in vintage Chesterfield style. Nothing goes over organic red wine but you can also choose beer or Lulu’s signature lemonade. Similar to the Axel Guldsmeden in Copenhagen, also here the sustainable interiors combine elements from Asia with traditional Nordic features. The lobby area is decorated with Persian carpets, marble coffee tables, and green indoor plants.

The Rooms

In total there are 81 rooms in the hotel, of which 24 are lofts and 6 are suites. I stayed in one of Lulu’s stylish lofts. The over 4 meter high ceilings are great. To make the extra space a little more lively, you can find a swing (especially fun for kids!) or a hammock in the loft rooms. Super practical: pretty much all cosmetic products you need are in the bathroom. Shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, shower gel, and more come from the organic, vegan, unisex and eco-friendly product line iloveEcoEssentials (ILEE). You won’t starve either as there is a small storage with organic snacks and drinks in the room. I had a good night’s sleep. When I think of the comfortable four-poster bed, I just wanna crawl underneath the big blanket with organic cotton linen! The open sleeping area with a second double-bed upstairs is easily reachable through a ladder. The lockable (and safe!) gate is ideal for small families with children. Or when you travel with your best girlfriends ??. Oh, and the FREE WIFI works great and is accessible throughout the hotel.

The Restaurant

If there was an increment form of love, I would use it for the description of the food. Because I ADORED it. The organic breakfast buffet offers delicious fruit bowls, veggies and a wide range of teas, breads, cakes, and cereals. Fresh scrambled eggs, German ham and salami, various cheeses and homemade butter and yogurts topped with acacia honey and almonds – there really is something for every taste! I took my coffee in a recycled to-go cup. Lunch includes a seasonal menu with a soup, salad and a main course (vegetarian & vegan options are always available!) at the in-house restaurant Sæson from Monday to Friday. On Saturday, you can enjoy a delicious dish à la carte. All foods and drinks at Lulu Guldsmeden are certified by Green Globe and the Gold Ø-label to be between 90 and 100% organic. You can only imagine how fresh and tasty every bite is. I also found cool that the hotel reminds their guests of their minimal waste policy by printing “Love Food, Hate Waste” on the environmentally-friendly napkins in the restaurant.

The Outdoor-Area

As much as we love fashion week, we all agree that it can be really exhausting. I recommend recharging your batteries either with a delish meal in the cozy restaurant or (if it’s not too cold) at Sæson’s terrace. Or just relax in the very quiet courtyard with your friends and a cocktail, traditional German beer or a coffee in the afternoon.

The Neighborhood

If you are new to Berlin, Lulu Guldsmeden has already put together a list of your favorite places. The hotel is situated in the vibrant “Kiez” (which means neighborhood in Berlin) of Tiergarten/Mitte. In the eco-certified Guldsmeden newspaper in your room you will find tips on where to go. Explore the most intimate corners in the neighborhood with a special focus on sustainability. Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to discover all the local shops, vegan restaurants or galleries. But I rented a bike from the hotel, which helped me get around easily and quickly. If you are with kids, you can also go on a customized Berlin Tour with them to discover the local green scene. Feel free to bring your dog!
