Jewelry has a unique power to evoke feelings and memories, carrying a deeper meaning as symbols of love, connection and personal expression. It’s no wonder that we form such a physical connection with jewelry: it tells stories. But what story does a new piece of jewelry tell? Every new piece begins with a story of its own, the idea, the design and the hands that made it, before we begin to add our own memories. That story also includes where its materials come from.
Unfortunately, it’s still challenging to trace the origins of diamonds and precious metals like gold and silver. The jewelry industry continues to face environmental and social issues, including pollution and the exploitation of workers. In some regions, miners, including children, work under dangerous conditions. Metal mining can release toxic substances that pollute water sources and the environment, damage ecosystems and leave land that can no longer be used for forestry or agriculture.
Diamonds, too, have a dark history: they have been used to fund wars. In Sierra Leone, one of the poorest countries in the world, diamonds fuelled a brutal civil war. People were forced from their homes, and instead of benefiting the community through investments in education and healthcare, the wealth from diamond mining ended up in the pockets of a few.
In this guide, we’ve handpicked jewelry brands from around the world for their design and craftsmanship. If you’d like to know more about how and where a piece was made, ask the brand directly. Certifications such as Fairmined or Fairtrade Gold can be a good starting point.

About The Brand
Founded in Berlin in 2013, stilnest started as one of the pioneering jewelry brands to counter mass-produced jewelry by focusing on slow craftsmanship and made-to-order jewelry. This means that they make each piece especially for you to follow a more resource-efficient path. Stilnest offers jewelry made from 24K gold vermeil, a high-quality and intricate process that uses a thicker layer of gold compared to standard gold-plated jewelry. In addition, stilnest offers jewelry made of 14K solid gold. This precious material is ideal for jewelry that will last a lifetime and be treasured by future generations. When it comes to materials, stilnest works with up to five manufacturers and eight passionate goldsmiths, stone setters and casters to create your piece of jewelry. The foundries are certified members of the “Responsible Jewellery Council”. The brand aims to inspire creativity and originality and believes that creativity thrives on the differences between people, diversity, collaboration, respect and inclusivity.

About The Brand
Lizzie Fortunato started her brand with a small handmade jewelry collection from her living room in New York and sold them to a small community. Now the most moving brand story of all time is unfolding: On her 24th birthday in 2008, her twin sister Kathryn left her Goldman Sachs bonus check – $10,000 – with a note that read: “Follow your dreams.” How cute is that? Since 2010, both sisters have worked behind the colorful accessories brand with a team of 14 employees. The handmade statement jewelry pieces are made in smaller quantities from recycled materials and unique materials from travels to Morocco, India, Japan, Italy, and Mexico. The materials cannot be recovered, which is why all pieces of jewelry are one-of-a-kind. We love the color combos and all their jewelry pieces, especially the earrings.
