The Ultimate Guide To 36 Ethical Jewelry Brands Worldwide

Jewelry brands that treat our earth like a gem.

Ethical jewelry is a precious token that has a deeper meaning as a symbol of love, connection and personal expression. Pieces of jewelry tell stories that awaken feelings and memories in us. In this way, we connect with the design, the craftsmanship and the origin of the materials. Unfortunately, the origin of diamonds and metals such as gold and silver is still difficult to trace.

And why is traceability so important? Because the jewelry industry continues to face negative environmental impacts such as pollution and human suffering. Metal mining harms our planet and people, as mining releases toxic metals that can be extremely harmful to health, leaking into the water and polluting the oceans and the environment, which can never be reversed. Wasteland is created that can no longer be used for forestry or agriculture due to the nature of the soil. In addition, the miners, including children, often work in inhumane conditions and are exploited.

Have you seen the movie “Blood Diamond” with Leonardo DiCaprio? The story is about the conflict and civil war in Sierra Leone in Africa, one of the world’s poorest countries and at the same time one of the regions where most diamonds come from. Diamonds financed the war. People where deported from their own homes because of diamond mining. Instead of sharing the wealth with the community and building an education and health system, the income goes into the pockets of just a few. And who buys the diamonds? Mainly European companies buy the stones and sell them to the end customer. Who would want to adorn themselves with such a blood diamond and thus indirectly support the conflict? We don’t!

The good news is that there are responsible jewelry brands that are consciously turning away from these practices and treating our planet and its people as they deserve to be treated: like a gem. Many of these brands support a transparent supply chain and work with standards such as the Kimberley Process, the Responsible Jewelry Council (RJC), FAIRMINED and Fairtrade or focus on using ethical lab-grown diamonds and recycling existing metals. Of course, even lab-grown diamonds consume resources like anything else that is newly produced, but you can be sure that synthetic diamonds are conflict-free, which is very important to us.

Read on to discover all 36 ethical jewelry brands.
